band, album: Worn In Red, In The Offing
label: No Idea
for fans of: The Esoteric, Planes Mistaken For Stars
cd review: Yet another VA band makes the list. Worn In Red hails from my old haunt, Charlottesville. The press sheet and various blogs pin them down with a comparison to Planes Mistaken For Stars, but I'm totally hearing the Esoteric's With The Sureness Of Sleepwalking all over this album. The churning rhythms and crushing harmonies are laden with metallic influence and to bill them as anything less just doesn't do this band's power justice. Perhaps their best trait is the ability to carry a massive song past the three minute mark while shedding all semblance of redundancy. Like the Esoteric's best (arguably) works, Your New Burden and Ram Faced Boy Worn In Red's In The Offing is continuously tumultuous and meandering with too many hooks and peaks per song to even give nods to. Awesome!
